Ingredients needed
For these crispy oven fried chicken wings, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 2 pounds fresh or thawed chicken wings and drummettes
- 3 Tbsp. arrowroot starch or corn starch
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 12 oz. bottle of Frank’s hot sauce
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
How to get chicken wings crispy in the oven
The secret to getting your chicken wings crispy when oven-baking is to give them a light coating of starch. I use Bob’s Red Mill arrowroot starch, but you can also use corn starch. This light coating allows the wings to get crispy. A heavier breading won’t always get crispy in the oven – so a lighter coating of a simple starch does the trick!
How to make oven fried chicken wings
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Add the wings to a large bowl then season with the salt, pepper, and starch. Toss to coat fully.
- Place a cooling rack onto a baking sheet and place the wings onto the cooling rack.
- Place into the oven and bake for 40 minutes at 400 degrees F.
- While the wings are baking, prepare the sauce. Add Frank’s hot sauce and butter to a saucepan and heat on medium, stirring to combine as the butter melts.
- When the wings are done, remove the baking sheet from the oven. Using kitchen tongs, individually dip each wing into the sauce and place them back onto the cooling rack. Place the baking sheet back into the oven and turn the oven setting to broil. Broil for 3-5 minutes or until the sauce begins to thicken and char onto the wings.
- Remove from oven and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
Optional cooking methods for chicken wings
- Oven-Baked Chicken Wings – Place the wings onto a broiler rack, or place a cooling rack onto a baking sheet and place the wings onto the cooling rack. Place into the oven and bake for 40 minutes at 400 degrees F. When done, using kitchen tongs, individually dip each wing into the sauce and place back onto the cooling rack. Place the baking sheet back into the oven and turn the oven setting to broil. Broil for 3-5 minutes or until the sauce begins to thicken on the wings.
- Air Fried Chicken Wings – Place wings into air fryer basket and cook for 20 minutes, turning every 10 minutes at 400 degrees. When done, using kitchen tongs, individually dip each wing into the sauce and place back into the air fryer basket and cook for 5-10 additional minutes.
- Oil Fried Chicken Wings – In a deep frying pan, heat 2 cups of cooking oil over medium-high heat. I recommend using avocado oil. Place the seasoned wings into the oil. Fry the wings for about 10 minutes on one side, then turn and fry for another 10 minutes. Remove from oil and let set, then dip into the sauce and serve.
