Juicy oven-baked lemon pepper chicken wings with a citrus and spice lemon pepper seasoning. You’ll find a mix of dry rub and sauced chicken wing recipes on the blog, and these lemon pepper chicken wings are one of our favorite dry rub wings!
Are you a sauced or dry rub chicken wing person? I’m sort of a mix of both, I like my wings sauced, but then broiled so the sauce bakes in just a bit, like in my buffalo ranch chicken wings. They’re not dripping with sauce, but have a nice charred layer of sauce. But, I also like a dry-rubbed chicken wing, like my cajun chicken wings recipe. These lemon pepper chicken wings are another dry-rubbed option, and we opted to use full chicken wings this time!
Ingredients needed:
- 4 pounds chicken wings
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 4 Tbsp. lemon pepper seasoning
- 1/4 tsp. salt
How to make oven-baked lemon pepper chicken wings
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Add the wings to a large mixing bowl. Then add the olive oil, lemon pepper seasoning, and salt.
- Using your hands, toss the wings to fully coat the wings in the oil and seasoning.
- Line a baking sheet with a cooking rack, or use a broiler pan, and place the wings onto the rack. Brush any remaining seasoning and oil mixture from the boil onto the wings.
- Bake for 45 minutes. Then, switch the oven to the broil setting and broil for 3-5 minutes, watching closely so they do not burn.
- Remove from oven and serve with your favorite dipping sauce. We recommend the lemon dill dipping sauce in our Air Fried Mahi Mahi Fish & Chips recipe, but ranch would work well, too!
Recipe FAQs and Variations
Do I have to use full-size chicken wings?
No! You can follow this recipe for chicken drummettes and wingettes. Sometimes we like the full chicken wings (which are simply drummettes and wingettes before they’re separated), plus sometimes full chicken wings are easier to find in the grocery store.
What is lemon pepper seasoning made of?
I highly recommend looking at the label of your lemon pepper seasoning. I prefer to use a lemon pepper seasoning that’s made with simply granulated lemon zest and cracked black peppercorns. Some lemon pepper seasonings add in additives and dyes, like Yellow #5, which is unnecessary.
Should I buy fresh or frozen chicken wings?
Either will work, just be sure to thaw your frozen chicken wings before baking.
Cooking variations
If you prefer to air fry or oil fry your chicken wings, you can follow the instructions below. If using full size chicken wings, I recommend increasing the cooking time by at least 5 minutes.
- Oven-Baked Chicken Wings – Place the wings onto a broiler rack, or place a cooling rack onto a baking sheet and place the wings onto the cooling rack. Place into the oven and bake for 40 minutes at 400 degrees F. When done, using kitchen tongs, individually dip each wing into the sauce and place back onto the cooling rack. Place the baking sheet back into the oven and turn the oven setting to broil. Broil for 3-5 minutes or until the sauce begins to thicken on the wings.
- Air Fried Chicken Wings – Place wings into air fryer basket and cook for 20 minutes, turning every 10 minutes at 400 degrees. When done, using kitchen tongs, individually dip each wing into the sauce and place back into the air fryer basket and cook for 5-10 additional minutes.
- Oil Fried Chicken Wings – In a deep frying pan, heat 2 cups of cooking oil over medium-high heat. I recommend using avocado oil. Place the seasoned wings into the oil. Fry the wings for about 10 minutes on one side, then turn and fry for another 10 minutes. Remove from oil and let set, then dip into the sauce and serve.
