Buttery, flaky air fryer apple turnovers – your new favorite air fryer recipe! Delicious puff pastry filled with apple pie filling, baked in the air fryer, then dipped in a sweet glaze for a deliciously easy air fryer dessert recipe!
Cooking with an air fryer is so ridiculously easy – but, have you ventured into cooking desserts in the air fryer? It’s easy to master cooking air fryer dinner recipes, like Cajun Air Fryer Pork Chops, or side dishes like Easy Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes, but many people overlook cooking simple desserts in the air fryer! Let’s start with a super easy air fryer dessert like these apple turnovers.
Ingredients Needed
- 12 oz. apple pie filling
- 1 package puff pastry
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 Tbsp. milk
- butter cooking spray
- water
How to make air fryer apple turnovers
- Dump the apple pie filling into a bowl. Then, using a fork, mash the apples until they’re fairly minced. You don’t want large apple chunks for the filling.
- Unroll one sheet of the puff pastry. Cut lengthwise down the fold lines. Then, cut two lines across, making nice equal squares. Repeat this process with the second sheet of puff pastry. You’ll have eighteen squares in total.
- Preparing one square at a time, drop about 1/2 Tbsp. of the minced pie filling onto the square. Place the filling off-center.
- Dip your finger into a cup of water and dampen the edges of the pastry square. Then, fold the corner opposite of the filling over, forming a triangle, and seal the edges.
- Using a fork, seal the edges further by mashing the fork over the edges.
- Continue this process until all eighteen squares are assembled, transferring to a baking sheet as you go.
- Spray your air fryer basket with butter cooking spray. Place about four turnovers into the basket. Note: keep the remaining turnovers in the refrigerator while you’re waiting to bake them.
- Spray the top with butter cooking spray. Then, bake at 350 degrees F. for 8 minutes. Remove and place onto a cooling rack. Continue this process for all turnovers.
- In a bowl, whisk together the milk and powdered sugar until you have a nice thin glaze. Take each turnover, dip the top into the glaze and place back onto the cooling rack, glaze side up, to set.
Recipe FAQs and Variations
Can you cook pastry in an air fryer?
Yes! Air fryer cooking is essentially the same as cooking in a convection oven. You can cook any pastry, pie dough, or other baked good in the air fryer. Just follow the baking instructions.
Can I use any filling for air fryer turnovers?
Yes! You can use any type of pie filling you prefer. Just keep the amount to about 1/2 Tbsp. and mince any large fruit pieces.
Can you reheat air fryer apple turnovers?
You can enjoy the turnovers cold, or, if you prefer them warmed up, you can simply microwave for just a few seconds or pop them back into the air fryer for just a minute or two to warm them up.
Do I need to refrigerate the turnovers?
No, you can store at room temperature in an air-tight container for up to three days. Beyond three days I would suggest refrigerating them. If you adjust the filling to a cream-based filling, you will want to refrigerate them from day one.
